Anambra-American Cancer Diagnostic and Treatment Center, Amichi-Nnewi, Axis, Anambra State, Nigeria
ASA Women USA Project Summary
The Anambra State Association, Women in USA, Inc. (ASA Women USA) seeks to strengthen the healthcare system in Anambra State, Nigeria and the country at large. ASA Women USA funded by USAID plans to construct Anambra-American Cancer Diagnostic and Treatment
Center (AACDTC). The center will be in compliance with the Americans with Disability Act (ADA). ASA Women USA has expertise in medical missions. Since 2011, ASA Women USA has engaged in medical missions in Anambra State, also noted in published work [(see footnote
1] that demonstrates strong evidence that there is a prevalence of advanced diseases in indigent women that can be prevented through routine screening and early detection, along with identified
gaps in patient awareness regarding signs and symptoms of breast cancer and other forms of cancer including cervical cancer. A multidisciplinary approach is needed to address gaps in diagnosis and treatment with the goal of increasing survival rates from 10% in Nigeria to near 70%, that of developed countries [ footnote 2].
The proposed state-of-the-art cancer center aims to improve the accessibility, affordability, and quality of the healthcare delivery system particularly for women facing cancer and maternal health concerns. The hospital intends to provide cutting-edge diagnostic and treatment facilities that will enable early and routine patient screening and targeted treatment therapies. The diagnostic equipment and services will incorporate the American Standard of care that spreads across several imaging modalities, radiology, surgical oncology, medical oncology, and radiation oncology, offering the best possible treatment and care through a multidisciplinary approach.
The utilization of medical missions/ Telemedicine will foster a significant exchange of learning between U.S. healthcare providers and local staff, involving multidisciplinary collaboration with physicians, pharmacists, surgeons, medical trainees, community volunteers, and nursing students
among others. Learning activities will encompass nursing staff/students engaging in patient care, surgical trainees receiving hands-on teaching, and educational workshops on breast health, with post-teaching surveys serving as a measure of participant learning, complemented by existing
data on the number of participants involved in the mission.
In addition to diagnosis and treatment, individual empowerment training will be an integral part of the center for self-care through education for recognizing cancer symptoms and seeking care.
A critical component of the center is the incorporation of U.S. Public diplomacy to promote America’s interests, cultures and policies by informing and influencing the center’s staff, users and the community at large. Some elements of public diplomacy include but are not limited to
inclusion, gender equity, local capacity building, diversity, empowerment through pedagogies, liberty, sustainability, technology, transparency, medical best practices, and innovation.
